I am curious as to what happens when you base a character off a house. When driving around a neighborhood or entering someone’s home, I imagine the tableaus within which my characters reside, influenced by the architecture, color, and décor of the home. These characters, surrounded by the spaces they occupy, populate the photographic series Inhabit. Through clothing, makeup, wigs, and lighting, the figures that I embody portray the homes I encountered. We often use our clothing styles as a form of self-expression, and I see the home and the choices the owner makes with it as being a similar way of expressing themselves, or who they wish to be.
Often, our homes become extensions of ourselves, so through the creative act of decorating them we gain a sense of control. By managing the home’s appearance, we establish connections to the objects around us in order to create a place that makes us feel safe. It is these spaces that we inhabit where we feel the most comfortable to be ourselves.
